    We have written extensively over the years about love and relationships. Our recent book, Golden Anniversaries: The Seven Secrets of Successful Marriage, chronicles the lives of happily married couples that have been married for three or more decades. Our many articles for SelfGrowth.com have described different aspects of love. Our article “How Will I Know I am in Love,” traveled around the world several times and was even translated into Chinese!
    And while we have written about how you will know you are in love, about how you will feel when you are in love, about the importance of the human touch in expressing love, and about how love sounds, we haven’t yet shared our observations and findings about what love looks like until today! So here goes.
    When we interview successfully married couples we spend a lot of time observing them while we listen carefully to what they say. We record our observations. We make note of what we see. Oh, what they say is important, but what we see is even more so.
    We have discovered that you can learn much about love from observing two people in love. So what does love look like? What do two people in love “say” through their interactions with the one they love? When you observe couples in love, how do they act? How do they interact? What do their actions tell you about their love for each other? Well, here’s something to think about.
    People in love can be observed:
    Listening to each other intently; holding hands while they walk or sit; touching each other often; teasing each other in playful ways; smiling at each other; hugging each other; sharing a meal from the same plate; opening doors for each other; putting their arms around each other; talking to each other with full eye contact; sitting together touching each other; sharing the care of their children; picking up each other’s plates and meal residue after eating at fast food restaurants; and walking next to each other.
    The way people in love gaze at each other – the way they look lovingly at each other – the knowing glances they share with each other—tells you they are in love. There is a “look to love.”
    These are just a few of the telltale signs of people in love. We bet you can name more, but the important point to remember is that it is hard to fake love. People, who observe people in love or those just pretending to be in love, know the difference! There is without a doubt “a look of love.”
    So, friends, our message about love being “an accumulation of the little things” should come through loud and clear again. You can’t fake love. True love can be seen, felt, observed, and heard. Keep these simple things in mind next time you think about love.
    We close with the words of Burt Bacharach in his very popular song, “The Look of Love.”

    There is no doubt – you can SEE love. You can’t hide it. You can’t fake it. You can’t fool those who observe your relationship with each other.
    To love is to show your love by your actions. To say you are in love doesn’t count for much unless you show your love. To look like love is, more often than not, to be in love.

    п»їMany clients that come to me for clearing work have an intuitive sense that they need to clear the negative energy that they still carry around past-life experiences. They believe in the concept of reincarnation so they know that not only have they been here before, but they may very well be here again, and whatever they do not deal with now, they will have to deal with later on, whether it is in this life or another. They have a knowing of the importance of clearing this energy because to them it feels like some sort of invisible baggage weighing them down and keeping them from moving forward toward the goals they are trying to achieve in their lives. They have a deep understanding that there is a larger picture than simply what they can see around them.
    This is a fairly good description of the client that seeks me out and immediately resonates with what I am offering as soon as they find me. But what if that doesn’t describe you? What if you have heard of a Past-Life Clearing, Soul Clearing, or Akashic Record Reading, but you don’t really understand the value in it and what it can do for you in real, tangible terms?
    Reason #1: Clearing out the Past.
    The single largest misconception I run into about this work, even among individuals who believe in reincarnation, is that there is little or no need to focus on past lives because we are not currently in that lifetime. The problem with that is that by overlooking everything you may have experienced in a past life simply because you are not there, it’s like overlooking the experiences of your childhood because you are now an adult.
    You simply can’t expect what you have experienced and is a real and vital part of you to simply vanish because you don’t want to face it or acknowledge that it happened. What happened to us in past lives is just as significant as what happened to us ten or twenty years ago, whether we willingly want to admit it or not, and until we can face it and deal with it head on, it will continue to come back to us in one way or another.
    Reason #2: Like Attracts Like.
    This leads me to my second point, and this is very simple, almost as simple as arithmetic. We’ve all heard the saying “like attracts like.” Well it’s true, and especially so in the Universe we are living in. It’s one of the foundations for how things work here, plain and simple. So if you are carrying a lot of negative energy, no matter whether it is from past lives or the present one, you will attract negative things into your life because that negative energy is simply a part of your existence.
    So take a look around at your life. What are you attracting? Are you attracting all good things? Or a mix of good and bad? Or way too much bad?
    If you’re not attracting all good into your life, then somewhere in your existence and your energy field there is something that matches that vibration. It’s really not more complicated than that.
    And when it comes to the manifestation process and opportunities that appear before us, the same thing applies. How can you manifest anything good into your life consistently and deliberately if your energetic vibration is a match for lower, negative energies? You can’t, and unfortunately, the really good opportunities won’t come your way either.
    Reason #3: New and Better Choices.
    The one thing that a Past-Life Clearing does that a Present-Life Clearing will not do is work on what we refer to as your Golden Web. And just to give you an idea, the Golden Web is an energetic structure that holds our energy bodies intact. It consists of 144,000 intersection points that represent all of our available choices in this lifetime. It also holds our energy bodies together and keeps us in alignment with our highest path and purpose. It also transmits information about our choices and actions back to the Akashic Records.
    This web can actually get tears in it from past-life experiences that will typically only be found in a past-life reading & clearing. If you have a tear in the Golden Web, it will act as an “energy leak” for you, causing you to lose valuable energy, and will also render choices unavailable to you that you were meant to have.
    Are you starting to wonder what you might have been missing out on in your life until now?
    Reason #4: Unparalleled Clarity and Freedom.
    Another point I’d like to touch on about the value of a Past-Life Clearing is the level of clarity you get as a result of this work. First of all, if you think about it, the energy around negative experiences that you have been carrying not just for years, but for LIFETIMES, is suddenly cleared.     п»їThere are many confusing and false messages bouncing around in cyberspace about life coaching. After coaching 600 people over the past 13 years, talking with dozens of coaches and surfing the websites of about 100 more, I'm sharing my take on what coaching is—and isn't. I'd like to say upfront that my intention is not to offend or denigrate. I'm simply stating my informed opinion, which is best taken with a grain of salt.
    It's important to start with the fact that the field of coaching is unregulated. This means that anyone, without any formal training, can call themselves a life coach. And they can coach any way they please. So caveat emptor! The onus of choosing the coach who will serve you best is on you.
    In my research, I've found that there are basically 2 kinds of life coaches, and the contrast is stark. There are coaches who say they'll hold you accountable and help you stay motivated until you achieve your goals. They tout their excellent listening and questioning skills as their core talents. In my admittedly unscientific survey, about 99% of the coaches I have met in person and online fall into this category.
    In the other camp are coaches with excellent listening and questioning skills who say they'll help you develop new ways of thinking and behaving. These coaches have studied and developed specific techniques that you can learn, then apply to any issue for the rest of your life. The goal of this type of coaching is for you to master the skills, using them independently to attain your desires faster, more efficiently and more enjoyably.
    In my opinion, coaching that goes on indefinitely, with you relying on the support of your coach to achieve goals (but not learning new skills) is codependency, not coaching. Intentionally or not, anyone who does this isn't a coach, they're a parasite. True life coaches have a set of strategies you can use to evolve yourself for the rest of your life. Beyond merely achieving goals, coaching is about your growth as a human being.
    With that said, I do believe that all coaches have a genuine desire to assist. However, most coaches' training (if they have any) is, well, the nicest words I can think of are...incomplete and, in some instances, inappropriate.
    With that background in place, let's peek behind the curtain at the biggest secrets in coaching.
    Secret #1: Promising You Instant Results is Impossible
    The Industrial and Information Ages have proliferated a plethora of gadgets, pills, books and videos that promise instant results. Not surprisingly, you’ve been programmed to expect that coaching will immediately make your life better.
    Accordingly, many coaches feel strong pressure to fulfill this expectation by producing some kind of dramatic “breakthrough” in every coaching session. The idea is that if the coach asks you the right deep questions, you'll have a brilliant flash of insight. There are two fallacies here. The first is in thinking that coaches “do” something to their clients. In fact, it's up to the client to take the actions that will produce the results they're looking for.
    Second, coaching is a process, not an event.
    While you may see some improvement in one session, life-altering, permanent improvements take time, repeated focus, and learning new ways to do things differently. Of course, major shifts can happen, but both you and your coach will put unnecessary pressure on yourselves by trying to force you to make a huge change you don't need or aren't ready for.
    Sure, questioning is a major part of coaching. But the role of questions isn't to sledge hammer you into a dramatic breakthrough. Questions are one tool used to guide you in your process of gaining incrementally deeper self-knowledge. The goal of coaching isn't to rush to get it done, it's to help you learn as much as you can.
    The processes of learning and making internal shifts in thinking is as unique as fingerprints and as unknowable as the depths of the ocean. It takes whatever time you need. Even with the biggest crystal ball in the world, no coach can promise a specific result by a certain date.
    Any coach who tells you that you'll achieve a certain level in 1,3, or 10 coaching sessions is ignoring your individuality and your responsibility for your own growth. This is inconsistent with the basic philosophy of coaching.
    Secret #2: Personality Tests are Worthless for Choosing Your Career
    The widely accepted myth of personality is that, by adulthood, it’s set in stone. But in 100 years of intense study, psychologists can’t even agree on the definition of personality, much less the limits of its development.
    Two popular personality tests that life and career coaches use are the Myers-Briggs and the DISC. Their thinking is that you should choose a career that matches your personality (shaky ground indeed).
    The purported benefit of this strategy is to narrow the overwhelming field of career choices. To alleviate your suffering, the coach squeezes you into one of a handful of boxes, then hands you a relatively short list of careers that some undefined percentage of those with your personality type could be “successful” in.
    Never mind that these tests have no scientific validity. Meaning, you could take the same test on two different days and get two very different results. On top of that, these tests compare you to arbitrary norms (which are gender, ethnicity and culturally biased), ignoring your individuality and your context.
    The icing on the cake is that since studies have shown that the Myers-Briggs does not predict job success well, using it for this purpose is expressly discouraged in its manual. But inexplicably, lots of coaches make gobs of money doing just that. That just seems unethical, or at least antithetical to the spirit of coaching.
    The DISC is based on the faulty logic that you possess one of four personality types, which can be teased out by forcing you to choose one of four options for each question on the test. What if you don't agree with any of the choices? If you choose enough options that don't reflect what you truly think, the results are less than worthless. They can be destructively misguiding.
    The best coaches will tell you that your personality traits are simply patterns of behavior you’ve developed (and gotten comfortable with) over your lifetime. As a pattern of behavior, any trait can be consciously changed any time you like, if you have the tools. Accordingly, their conversation about your career won't use the strategy of matching a job in Column A to a trait in Column B.
    Secret #3: Taking Action For The Sake Of Action Undermines Your Real Power
    To achieve the results they tout, coaches preach action. Lots of it. They think that if you do more, you’ll get more, faster. They'll sell you fancy spreadsheets and planners to track your actions, too.
    But in all of this act-act-act, you can lose sight of your motivation: why you want what you want. It’s by staying focused on why you want something—the benefits of having it—that you’ll find the juice to keep pursuing it until you get it.
    As I stated in my previous post, most coaches describe their role as holding you accountable to take big actions before the next coaching call. Their strategy is that you'll be motivated by the desires to avoid the humiliation of having nothing to report, and this scheme does work. Avoiding humiliation is a strong motivator, but it pulls you away from your greatest source of power: your passion. So accountability is the default strategy for coaches who don't have any tools to address the real issue: how to deal with the negative thoughts that block you from freely pursuing your passion.
    The best coaches don't rely on your human drive to avoid pain (humiliation, guilt, etc). Instead, they fan the flames of your motivation to seek whatever you're passionate about.
    Secret #4: Success Isn't A Destination, And You Can't Possess It
    Coaches talk a lot about achieving success, as if success were a thing you could possess. Well, if it were, then success would also be a destination. Once you achieve it, you'll be able to sit back and coast for the rest of your life.
    When you're driven to succeed, you allow yourself to feel good only after you've completely achieved that desire. But in this scenario, the good feeling eventually fades, which prompts you to go after another goal so you can feel good again.
    However, there’s a huge difference between being successful and having a fulfilling life. Success is a distant external goal you might achieve someday. Every day until then is about work, effort, sacrifice and pain. Deferred gratification.
    On the other hand, when you choose a fulfilling life, every step you take in the direction of every desire becomes an act of fulfillment. You experience fulfillment as an internal choice that creates a perpetual state of being: you feel fulfilled every day.
    Secret #5: Success Doesn't Require Discipline. Even If You Think You Need It, You Have Plenty Of It
    Coaches insist that it takes discipline and commitment to be successful. But you already possess all the discipline, commitment and courage you need to get anything you want. You just don't know it, you certainly can't feel it and you don't need it, anyway. In their defense, most coaches are unaware of this, too.
    Here's the proof: If you've ever worked a job you didn't like for more than 10 minutes, you have discipline. My bet is that you've worked for years at jobs you found boring or otherwise uninspiring, did favors for others you didn't want to do, and performed admirable household chores to boot. That takes HUGE discipline!
    So give yourself some credit. Just because you struggle to lose 10 pounds doesn't mean you're a wimpy, undisciplined loser. It just means you don't know how to focus yet.
    After coaching 600 people, I've seen that you don’t need to develop strong skills of commitment, courage or discipline to enjoy a fulfilling life. All you need is passion.
    You see, passion isn't just a feeling, it's a tour de force. When you engage your passion, tons of energy, discipline, courage and commitment (more on this next) come along for the ride. What's true is that it's your nature to think about, talk about and pursue the object of your passion until you get it. When you think about it, discipline and commitment are just synonyms for the desire to stay focused on what you want until you get it.
    But discipline is a heavy word. Baggage-laden with guilt, frustration, disappointment and failure. Coaches are useful for easing the weight of that baggage only if they emphasize the pursuit of passion as the basis and driver of every goal.
    Secret #6: Commitment Doesn't Create Limitations You “Just Have To Live With”
    There's a pervasive belief in our culture that making a commitment creates limitations. When you choose one career or one mate, you're essentially un-choosing every other possibility. You're stuck with your choice, forever sacrificing other attractive options.
    This perspective misses an important point. Ultimately, a commitment is an expression of your freedom to choose. Once you choose, you're free to express yourself fully in the context of that career, relationship, hobby, whatever. And as long as you live, you're always free to choose again, and again, and again...
    When you order the fish, you've excluded the steak or the chicken from that meal. But from herbs to cooking methods to side dishes, there are innumerable variations on any food you choose. Don't forget that every meal also includes a salad and a dessert—more ways to satisfy your palate. The point is, there are infinite ways to spice up your career, your relationships, and every other part of your life so that you'll feel full (fulfilled) every day. The only limitation is your imagination.
    You can't earn a living without choosing a career path. You can't have a fulfilling romantic life without a beloved. So choose the steak career or mate. Or the chicken or fish career or mate. Just choose, live and learn. You can always choose again if you discover you need to do that.

    п»їI am always taken aback at the number and persistence of gout myths. Just read a few Internet web pages on gout and gout treatments and it won’t take you long to find contradicting information - even from supposedly reputable sites. These myths are one of the key reasons why the quality of gout care for gout has fallen so much over the past few decades. Bad information keeps getting passed on - over and over. This article will help you understand some of these myths and learn the truth.
    Myth #1: Gout is curable. There are tons of websites out there that promise “gout cures” if only you send them some amount of money. The truth is, that for 90% of cases, gout is a genetic condition. This is why gout often runs in families. Genetic conditions cannot be cured, only managed. The other 10 % of cases are called secondary gout. These are usually caused by some underlying medical condition. Some of these conditions can be very serious such as lymphoma or kidney disease. Only a small number of cases are truly ‘curable’. These cases are usually caused by high blood pressure medications called diuretics or extreme obesity. If you have gout, your doctor should check for a secondary cause of gout, if none is found, then you have a genetic condition that can only be managed.
    Myth #2: “Natural” or “Herbal” treatments are better than all those scary gout drugs. Colchicine, a drug commonly used to treat gout is made from the bulb of the autumn crocus flower (scientific name: Colchicum autumnale) and is a “natural” treatment that has been used for over 2000 years. Despite this, Colchicine is a highly toxic substance that causes nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea in 100% of people that take it at a high dose. Fact is, that more than half of the modern pharmacopeia are “natural” substances but may not be healthy to take, however, they do have the benefit of having their safety and use closely monitored by the FDA. Natural treatments can also make things worse if you are not careful. For example, vitamin C has been shown to lower uric acid levels and reduce gout attacks but they can also increase the risk of kidney stones and if you start then suddenly, it can actually cause more attacks. The truth is that many of the prescription drugs used to treat gout can be dangerous, but if taken properly, they can be very safe and are highly effective. Most gout attacks can be stopped in minutes or hours, not days or weeks. And if you properly manage gout’s underlying cause, hyperuricemia, there is no need to suffer from gout attacks at all.
    Myth #3: Gout medications will make your attacks stop right away. Actually, uric acid lowering medications can increase gout attacks in the short run but eventually, over the course of 6-12 months, they will usually stops them completely. Most people experience more attacks when they first start taking these medications, then stop taking them, figuring that they are not working. This is because we know that sudden changes in uric acid levels, even drops in uric acid levels, can trigger attacks. Most doctors do not prescribe uric acid lowering medications at the right doses and do not also prescribe prophylaxis medications to prevent these attacks. If you are starting to take uric acid lowering medications, make sure you are starting at a very low dose and increase slowly over a period of several weeks to full strength - never start or stop them suddenly. Also make sure your doctor has given you medications to prevent attacks during the first 6-12 months of treatment.
    Myth #4: If you stay way from seafood and beer your gout will go away. Of all the gout myths, myths about diet are the most presistant. But like all good myths, there is some truth it. Seafood and beer have both been shown to be powerful foods to cause a sudden increase in uric acid, which can trigger an attack but in most cases staying away from these foods or eating a strict “low purine diet” will only reduce the number of attacks you have, not eliminate them completely. 90% of gout cases are genetic and diet cannot overpower genetics.
    Myth #5: If you have gout, you should stay away from all alcohol. Again, like with all good myths, there is some truth here. Beer has been shown to be very bad for gout. People with gout should not drink beer at all - this advice doesn’t make me very popular, but it is true. Spirits such as vodka and whiskey also raise the risk of gout but only about half as much as beer. Red wine on the other hand, can slightly decrease your risk of gout if you drink no more than one glass per day. With two glasses, the risk is about the same as for those that do not drink at all. So the key here is if you want a drink, stick to red wine and limit yourself to, at most, two glasses.
    Myth #6: Other then the pain of gout attacks, gout really doesn’t cause any other problems. This one is dead wrong, and I mean dead. Improperly treated gout can be a crippling disease. Regular gout attacks can damage and even destroy joints, and tophus (large growths of uric acid crystals in the body) can disfigure hands, feet and form in other parts of the body, including the heart (this is where the ‘dead’ comes in). Also, the underlying cause of gout, hyperuricemia, have been shown to be strongly associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity. All of which are very deadly. Gout can and does kill!
    Myth #7: I am overweight but that doesn’t have anything to do with my gout. Absolutely wrong! Excess body weight is strongly connected with hyperuricemia and gout. Probably the best thing you can do for your gout as well as your health is to loose weight and keep it off! Of course, no one wants to hear that, but if you have gout and are significantly overweight, you are all but guaranteed to get one of the deadly diseases I mentioned in the previous myth. Loosing weight and exercising regularly are the best ways to avoid these diseases.
    Myth#8: Once an attack starts, there is nothing you can do by wait it out. Actually, if you act quickly, you can stop an attack an hour or so. How? Take some of the powerful non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) your doctor has given you at the very first sign of symptoms (see gout basics). If you have medical reasons why your can’t take NSAIDs, don’t worry, there are many other options including corticosteroids, ACTH and others. However, you should avoid colchicine in you can.
    Myth #9: Food high in proteins are bad for gout. Food high in proteins actually lower uric acid levels and is good for gout. What matters is where the proteins come from. Meat proteins have been shown to raise uric acid levels while vegetable proteins have been shown to lower uric acid levels - even those that are high in purines.
    Myth #10: Medical science knows little about gout. Actually, of all the thousands of diseases out there, gout is one of the best understood diseases. Doctors and scientists know exactly what causes the disease and how it progresses. What has happened over the years is that science has become bored with gout and little research has occurred since the 1970’s and 80’s. Doctors have collectively “forgotten” how to properly manage the disease correctly. Recently one research study showed that as many as 78% of doctors are managing gout improperly. Lately however, there has been a resurgence of interest, new medications are being developed and new research is being conducted to fill in the holes that remain.

The most important thing to remember if you are to become more successful in using your imagination is that you need to know what you want in life. Take time to write down exactly what you desire, what you want to achieve in your life, what you need to make you happy, and how you can go about getting it. Put your aims on paper and pin them to a wall where you will see them regularly. Focus all your desire, determination and faith on immediate goals that will take you step by step towards achieving your main objectives and be persistent in chasing your dreams. By reminding yourself of the journey you want to take in life and focusing your mental energy on thinking of ways you can go about getting there your subconscious mind should eventually start to offer you the routes to success. You are then on the way to making use of your creative imagination. You cannot put a price on goods ideas. People have made themselves incredibly wealthy through making practical uses for their ideas, or even selling them, purely by developing the use of their imaginations. In this world there are people who have ideas and then there are people who can put them into action. Sometimes you just cannot put a price on a good idea. The story of pretty much every great fortune starts with the forming of ideas through the use of the creative imagination and then the selling of the idea. There are people who have the ideas and people who can put them into action. Some successful businessmen have both of these kinds of people at their aid to help with the things they knew less about. Unlike people, ideas have the potential to live on, sometimes through many generations. Christianity is an obvious example. The chief tenet "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" has been central to the morality of countless people and will continue to be indefinite.
